By becoming a park pal at Suomenlinna Helsinki residents have the chance to participate in the upkeep of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is also one of the city’s districts.
Suomenlinna volunteers get to work in the historic Piper Park, Church Park, and Casino Park, and in other parts of the island. Suomenlinna’s park pals help with the upkeep of the area, for instance by collecting litter, raking the lawns, and plucking up weeds and invasive plant species. It is possible to arrange specialised tasks for people with specialist skills.
Suomenlinna receives about one million visitors annually. With this amount of visitor traffic, voluntary work plays an important role in the care and preservation of this historical landmark.
Volunteer activities are supervised by regional park volunteer managers. Suomenlinna’s Park pals supervisors are gardeners Aino Heininen and Pauliina Harvikka. For more details, please contact the Governing Body of Suomenlinna’s landscaping specialist Iina Johansson, tel. +358 (0)29 533 8322 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can register as a Suomenlinna park pal at the customer service of Public Works Department of City of Helsinki at Elimäenkatu 5. You can read more about voluntary work at Suomenlinna from here.
